As we danced in Jim’s garden
Fran told us she had invited her neighbor to join us.
As James, Rebecca, and Fran danced
and Liz, Anne, Katie, and Maureen watched
Antoinette emerged from the alley
into the garden
in a purple turban
and turquoise scarf
She, living alone
and living with cancer
joined in without hesitation
Months later
after Antoinette had passed away
Fran told us a story.
After we left the garden that day
Antoinette and Fran shared tea in her kitchen.
Antoinette wrote this poem.
